Characterised by severe pain during urination or in the lower back/abdomen/side, kidney stones are a common condition. In fact, its prevalence has gone up in recent years as a result of modern dietary changes. They often cause acute pain and require immediate medical intervention.

With over 30 years of experience, Dr Michael Wong is a reputable urologist of international standing. He is particularly passionate about treating kidney stones after having fallen victim to this painful yet common condition back in 1990! This has given him valuable perspective from a kidney stone patient’s point of view. Over the years, Dr Wong has kept himself actively involved in leadership roles in renowned urological organisations around the world.
If kidney stones are suspected, blood tests, urine tests and imaging tests will help your urologist identify important details about the causes, severity, location, composition and risk factors of your case of kidney stones.
This depends on the size, location and composition of the stones. Apart from passing them out naturally, non-invasive laser and shockwave therapy may be used, or minimally invasive surgery in cases of very large stones.
While not all kidney stones can be prevented, one can certainly reduce their risk of recurrence to varying extents. With detailed checks, close monitoring and a customised dietary plan, this may be possible.
