Non-Surgical Kidney Stone Treatment

Fortunately, surgery is not needed in most cases of kidney stones.

In most mild to moderate cases, we adopt conservative methods to manage the situation:

1.  Drinking Lots of Water

+
  • This simply helps to flush the kidney stones out better during urination.

2.  Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL)

+
  • This uses shockwaves to break up kidney stones in the bladder into tiny pieces so that they can be flushed out more easily during urination.

3.  Laser Lithotripsy

+
  • This is usually performed on the lower kidney stones using a ureteroscope. This helps to break up the stones into tiny pieces so that they can be flushed out more easily.

Depending on the method used, pain relief or general anaesthesia will be provided so that you can just focus on recovery.

Minimally Invasive Kidney Stone Removal

Reserved only for particularly large kidney stones, minimally invasive procedures may be recommended to effectively remove them.

1.  Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery

+
  • This utilises a fibre-optic endoscope to precisely locate and remove the kidney stones.

2.  Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy

+
  • Also known as stone extraction, this technique is usually reserved for larger stones.

Why is it Important to Seek Prompt Treatment?

Should a kidney stone get stuck in one of the tubes connecting the kidney to the bladder, serious complications can occur. This includes kidney infection, kidney damage and even kidney failure.

The kidney stones rubbing against the inner lining of the urinary tract can also sometimes cause damage and bleeding, and the injured site can become a site for recurrent infection.

Hence, proper medical attention is crucial to facilitate close monitoring and optimal healing.
